I have no idea how it happened, because as a kid I was rarely able to convince my Mom of anything... but I somehow managed to convince her to buy Beetlejuice when it came out on video.

As a kid I rarely saw movies in the theater. I grew up very poor, at one point we were on welfare, and things that involved going out just didn't happen. My Mother and I were at a Costco, which is also a strange occurrence because we didn't have a Costco membership. We were there because we had either borrowed someone's membership or were using one of those free trial situations.

I was around 8 or 9 years old at the time, and I distinctly remember seeing the display for the Beetlejuice VHS. I had never heard of the movie, but I saw that display and it immediately looked interesting to me. I completely made up a story about how I had heard how good the movie was, and begged my Mother to get it.

It sounds reasonable enough, unless you know my Mother. We never spent money on those kinds of things, and Beetlejuice is nowhere near a movie that she would choose to spend time or money on... She doesn't like "scary" movies, comedies, or pretty much anything good. Think Hallmark or Lifetime made for TV movies, and you'll pretty much have her genre pegged.

Yet for some reason, the stars aligned and something special happened that day. She bought it.

Maybe there's more to the story that I don't know or remember. Maybe she heard from a friend that the movie was good also, and that's why she believed me when I claimed I had heard the same.

It was a good movie, after all. It has a rating of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. It's just brilliant, through and through. I guess my lie paid off.

My Mother, however, was not a fan after watching it. Which seems so obvious to me now, especially. She had to have known that she wasn't going to like it simply by looking at the cover. So what prompted her to purchase it? I guess we'll never know.

The one thing I do know... is that my parents still own that VHS copy of it. It's in their cabinet as we speak.

Anyways, here's 9 things you probably didn't know about Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
